You might think a village this size would lean on one dependable pizza joint and call it a day, but Wappingers Falls has a way of surprising you, especially when you’re circling for parking near the Mesier Park bandstand. The range here runs from Loco Garibaldi’s transcendent birria tacos to a gluten-free pie at Nonnina’s that actually tastes like pizza, not a challenge.

We ate our way through Thai duck pad thai, loaded halal trays, and a pistachio cheesecake we’re still thinking about, and yes, we spilled sauce on ourselves more than once. Take a look, and bring a napkin.

If you find yourself in Wappingers Falls with a craving for Thai food, Lopburi is the place to let your guard down and order too much. I started with the crispy bang bang shrimp, which arrived with a satisfying crunch and a sauce that made me momentarily forget I was reviewing anything. The fresh Thai salad was exactly that, crisp and bright, though I did spend a moment wondering if I should have ordered two. The duck pad thai was tasty, with tender pieces that didn't get lost in the noodles. The Thai iced tea was great, and the service was friendly and attentive. I left full and slightly embarrassed by how quickly I finished.

Heritage Food and Drink is one of those rare spots where consistency feels like a superpower, and I say that as someone who once burned toast. The space is beautiful, with a chill atmosphere that invites conversation or a quiet read at the bar. Their whiskey and drink selection is impressive, and I found myself nodding approvingly at the shelf more than once. Retro Bites is a family-friendly spot that understands winter in the Hudson Valley can be brutal, so they offer free games and a chalkboard wall to keep kids entertained. I went with a group of adults, and we still ended up playing something, which says a lot about the place's charm. The staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is welcoming, with an indoor entertainment setup that feels like a bonus rather than a gimmick. The food is tasty, and they offer halal options, which is thoughtful. I had a burger that was solid, and the fries were fine. For families or gamers, this is a solid choice, even if you have to drive a bit.

Best halal in Dutchess County
Loaded, juicy, tender gyro meat
Lamb or chicken over rice
Well-seasoned, crispy fries

845 Halal is the kind of spot that earns its reputation one loaded tray at a time. The gyro meat is juicy, tender, and piled on, and the lamb or chicken over rice is well seasoned and satisfying. I tried both, because I couldn't decide, and I have no regrets. The fries are crispy and well seasoned, and they hold up even when you get them to go. This is the best halal in Dutchess County, and I say that with the authority of someone who has eaten too much halal in the area. Service is quick, and the portions are generous. You will leave full and possibly need a nap.

Huge sandwich portions
Tasty breakfast sandwiches
Sweet esquimo drink
Clean, pleasant service

Los Hornitos Bakery is a modest, clean spot that packs a punch with sandwich portions that are almost laughably huge. I ordered a breakfast sandwich, and it was tasty, with fresh bread and a good balance of egg, meat, and cheese. The sweet esquimo drink is a nice treat, sort of like a tropical smoothie, and it pairs well with a pastry. The service is pleasant, and the place is clean, which is always a plus. I felt slightly embarrassed by how much I ate, but the worker just smiled. You should come hungry, because the portions are not joking. I will be back for that breakfast sandwich when I need a hearty start.

Nonnina's is a welcoming spot that has cracked the code on gluten-free pizza, which is a feat I've seen fail elsewhere. The pizza is praised highly, and after one bite, I understood why. The crust is crisp and doesn't taste like cardboard, which is a low bar that many places stumble over. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and the service is quick even with kids in tow. The pistachio cheesecake is a standout dessert, rich and nutty, and I’m not ashamed to say I thought about it for days. Parking is easy, and the outdoor seating is pleasant. You will feel comfortable, even if you, like me, arrive with flour on your shirt.

Everything is made fresh daily, and owner Roberto's personal touch is evident in every detail, from the warm greeting to the spot-on guacamole. The empanadas are perfect, flaky and filled with goodness, and the strawberry fresca is top notch, refreshing without being too sweet. You will notice the care, and you will probably become a regular. I left with a happy stomach and a newfound respect for birria.

Towne Crier Cafe is the kind of place that makes you consider driving an hour just for dinner and a show, and I say that as someone who lives close enough to justify it. The live music is the draw, but the food is surprisingly good, not just an afterthought. I had a burger that was cooked properly, and the sides were solid. The service from the staff is exceptional, attentive without hovering. The atmosphere is perfect for a dinner-and-show night, and the sound quality is excellent. Tamarind Fine Dining in Poughkeepsie is a bit of a drive from Wappingers Falls, but it's a destination worth the miles. The Indian fine dining experience is exceptional, with fresh, flavorful, memorable dishes that come out beautifully presented. I had the butter chicken, which was creamy and rich, and the naan was soft and warm. The service is attentive and polished, and the hospitality is warm, making you feel like a guest rather than a customer. They also do outstanding catering, which I've seen at an event, and it was impressive. You will leave satisfied, and you might start planning a special occasion to come back.

Leo's Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria is the kind of place that reminds you why Bronx-style pizza has a cult following. The pie is done right: thin, foldable, with a crust that has just the right chew. The inviting pizza counter atmosphere makes you want to sit down, order a slice, and watch the world go by. The fresh salads are a good counterpoint, with tasty add-ons like pepperoni or olives. I had a slice and a salad, and I felt like a responsible adult, which is rare for me. Worth a return visit, especially if you're in the mood for a no-frills, satisfying meal.
