West Point is a strange place to eat. You’ve got cadets marching past castle walls, and then you’ve got a lamb curry so good you’ll forget the Hudson is right there.

I’ve eaten a flawless club sandwich above the river and watched a steak arrive undercooked at a cute spot that couldn’t get its menus straight. The beer list at Draught Industries is the best around, and the ribeye at MacArthur’s will justify the drive alone.

MacArthur's Riverview looks like a castle. That is not an accident. The bones here are the real draw. Dungeons and all, except the dungeon is for aging wine. I started with the rich lobster bisque. Good call. The ribeye followed. Also a good call. My waiter had been there for years. He knew the menu, the view, and when to disappear. The balcony hangs over the Hudson. You can watch the water while you work through your steak. Portions are serious. The bill is a relief. Not cheap, but fair for this view. I did not want to leave. So I ordered another coffee and stayed.

Getting into West Point is an exercise in patience. The parking lot is small. Your ID is checked. The reward is the dining room. The view is the entire point. The Foundry Rose is a mixed bag. We got a table fast. The dining room is cute. Then we waited. And waited. Our drinks took too long. The food came out wrong. My friend's steak was undercooked. We also noticed our menus showed different prices. Awkward. The service was friendly. Just absent. Not my favorite combination. The food, when it was right, was decent. It will fuel a hike.
